Hyper focusing, A concept I was recently exposed to from the book, “Hyperfocus: How to work less and Achieve more” by Chris Bailey.
This Article is not the summary of the book as I have only read about 100 pages and will read the rest of the book after some days as my Sem exams are approaching and I don’t want to rapid read this book.
But in this article, I definitely give a glimpse about the book and I will also share some of my personal tips and tricks to Hyperfocus.
Hope you find this article insightful :)

First of all, being productive isn’t about how much time you spend completing a time, that is the more hours you spend at work the more productive you are.
But it’s about how fast you can complete a task.
And in order to complete the task faster, you need to hyperfocus.
Hyper focusing for me means that I am intentionally focusing on one single complex task, it can be writing this article, studying for my exam, working on an important project in your work, anything in which you are intentionally giving your sole attention and working on it is hyper-focusing.
We all have hyperfocused on something without intentionally, maybe it was because a deadline was approaching, or it was just unintentional.
When you hyperfocused time flies quickly and you feel productive, even after doing more tasks than usual you still have the energy to do more. Is this how you felt when you hyperfocused?
What happened the next day? you weren’t able to focus the way you were able to the day before? even after doing less work than before you are exhausted, why did this happen?
It would be so better if we could hyperfocus every day, with intention, right?
Today I am going to share some of the ways I hyperfocus every day and I hope you will find some tips that work for you too!
Here are some of the tricks that helped to hyperfocus intentionally:
1. Set an Alarm - At the start set an alarm of 25 minutes and hyperfocus on one particular task in that time frame.
This is something I personally recommend doing, you see at the start when I decided I wanted to hyperfocus for a particular time period, my mind would wonder how much time is left, and even if I set the timer, I may feel distracted as I am able to see how much time is left.
That is why I recommend setting an alarm so that you don’t check your phone to see how much time is left.
2. Turn off your Internet and put your phone on Silent - Another important thing to do before going into a hyperfocus state is to turn off your internet so that you don’t get distracted or disturbed by your friends, unnecessary notifications from YouTube, spam messages, and other apps.
If you are working as a professional, and can’t afford to turn your internet off, as you are working from home, you can turn off all the unnecessary notifications such as YouTube, and Whatsapp (if you aren’t using it for communication with a team).
Even if you are using WhatsApp to communicate with your team, turn off all the unnecessary group notifications.
3. Find your productive hours - We all feel productive at a particular period of time in a day. For me, it’s in the morning, but for many, it can be in the evening or at night. For finding your productivity hours try to focus at different times of the day, and after focusing ask yourself “At what time of the day did I feel the most productive and focused?”
Don’t do this in one single day, each day decide a different time of the day to focus, and as the above question.
When you find out your productivity hour, try to hyperfocus at that time every day.
4. Plan ahead - “Prevention is better than cure.”
Before hyper-focusing try to remove the controllable distraction such as putting your phone on silent and if possible putting it in a different room, or somewhere you can’t see it.
Not all distractions are physical, many of the time our mind is the one that distracts us, therefore before hyper-focusing we should complete all the incomplete tasks such as watering plants, calling someone such as a plumber.
Also, keep a book when your hyperfocus so that whenever you hyper-focus and remember an important task you can write it down in that book.
Lastly, always plan your tasks ahead of time so you have a clear vision the next day and your chances of procrastinating reduce.
5. Sit on a study table / Dinning table - Never sit on the sofa and bed, sitting in such a place will make you procrastinate and lose focus. I prefer you can study at a study table/dining table or anywhere where you can sit straight and have support to keep your book.
Summary
Hyper focusing simply means working on a single complex task by giving your sole attention to it, in order to hyperfocus you should complete all your incomplete tasks, set an alarm, decide on tasks you want to hyperfocus on, turn off the internet, and keep your phone on silent.
